Anapka the donkey will fly no more thanks to an outcry of compassionate newspaper readers.
It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s a … donkey? Seeing a flying mule would surely grab your attention, wouldn’t it? That’s exactly what a Russian recreational company was going for when they sent Anapka parasailing for a terrifying 30 minutes.
But when the video hit YouTube and it was obvious the animal was terrorized by her flight, readers of the British newspaper The Sun wrote in by the thousands urging the paper to rescue the poor donkey.
“Our readers were deeply moved,” Sun correspondent Garry O’Shea told the Associated Press. “We were contacted by thousands of readers. They wanted us to ensure the well-being of this animal.”
The Sun bought dear Anapka and sent her to the Kremlin riding school outside of Moscow. She was warmly received by reporters and supporters who snapped photos and gave her loving pats.
Though the flight was devastating, the riding school’s veterinarian has given Anapka a clean bill of health.
The donkey’s journey is not yet over, though. She still must find a new home, but there is no shortage of volunteers.
Harry Redknapp, coach of England’s Tottenham Hotspur football club, has offered to house her in his new animal sanctuary in Hampshire. The Sun has received a number of offers to adopt Anapka, as well.
Looks like this donkey will be living the high life in a much better sense from here on out!
